Old City Centre
This number 1 of our tours is THE way to get to know the real Amsterdam.
The Damrak, the Dam and the Kalverstraat are the best-known and most visited places, but the city has much more to offer…
During this special walk, there is a lot of attention for the Golden Age and you will learn everything about Rembrandt van Rijn and the places where some of his most famous paintings were created.
Of course, your guide will tell you the necessary anecdotes and the meaning of special street names and facade stones will also be explained.
The Western Islands and the IJ
The Western Islands are three islands in the center of Amsterdam that were built in 1611 to expand the ports.
Due to their isolated location between the IJ and the railway line from Amsterdam to Haarlem, the islands form an oasis of peace and tranquility in the hectic city and are therefore an ideal place for artists and writers.
During the tour you will not only see the homes and studios of George Hendrik Breitner and Ans Markus and the favorite café of writer Jan Mens, but also the house where Eli Asser lived and the birthplace of photographer Jacob Olie.
Canals and Facades
Amsterdam has a total of 165 canals with a combined length of 75 kilometers and about 1500 bridges.
In the Golden Age between 1600 and 1700 there was enormous wealth and prosperity in Amsterdam. Merchants and bankers were among the richest in the city and had the most beautiful houses with impressive facades built along the new canals.
During this tour you will see the most beautiful and famous canal houses including the Bartolotti house and the Anne Frank house and you will see the official residence of the mayor of Amsterdam. After the tour you will know the difference between a neck gable and a frame gable.
Architecture and industrial heritage
The Amsterdam School
The Amsterdam School is a movement in art and architecture from the first half of the 20th century.
The guide takes you to the Het Schip residential complex from 1919 by architect Michel de Klerk in the Spaarndammerbuurt, the absolute highlight of the Amsterdam School architecture, and to the beautiful Zaanhof. A visit to Museum Het Schip is also possible. The entrance to the museum (€15) is not included in the price of this tour.
NDSM shipyard
The NDSM shipyard in Amsterdam North is a rugged, adventurous and iconic area on the IJ. After the closure of the yard in 1983, the complex became a breeding ground for artists and creative businesses.
While the guide tells you all about the former function of the various buildings, you can enjoy beautiful street art. For example, on the wall of the Lasloods you can see the world's largest image of Anne Frank
Plan South
Beautiful Amsterdam School architecture in the Plan Zuid designed by HP Berlage.
Admire the special Diamantbuurt where many diamond workers once lived and the impressive De Dageraad residential complex.
The Diamantbuurt is rich in special buildings and monuments.
The guide will take you to the house where Anne Frank and her family lived from 1933 to 1942 and to the house of Gerard Reve where the book De Avonden is set.
History and art
Rembrandt and the Golden Age
Rembrandt van Rijn was born in Leiden in 1606 and moved to Amsterdam in 1631 where his great fame began. Rembrandt lived and worked in the building that now houses the Rembrandt House Museum.
There is also a lot of attention for the Golden Age, a period of great prosperity and wealth in Amsterdam.
The guide will take you to the places where Rembrandt's most famous paintings, such as the Anatomy Lesson, the Steel Masters and the Night Watch, were created.
Jewish Amsterdam
Amsterdam has a rich and eventful Jewish history and Jewish life gave the city its very own identity with associations, synagogues, markets and Jewish neighbourhoods. The Second World War left deep wounds.
The guide will take you to famous places such as De Dokwerker and the Auschwitz monument and you will visit the Hollandse Schouwburg. During this impressive tour you will also visit the Holocaust Names Monument, which opened in September 2021.
Hildo Krop in Amsterdam
Hildo Krop was born in 1884 as a baker's son and he was destined to take over his father's pastry shop.
However, he chose to become an artist. In 1956 he was awarded the honorary title City Sculptor of Amsterdam. His work adorns many bridges and buildings in the city.
It is fascinating that this artist from Steenwijk in Overijssel left more than 400 sculptures on buildings and bridges in Amsterdam.
During this tour of Amsterdam South, the guide will take you to his most beautiful and best-known works.

*****
“Edward and his wife received us warmly and we were given a nice tour of the Zeedijk as we wanted. He gave us a clear overview of the historical development of Amsterdam with an interesting story about the origins of the Dam Square. The story was fascinating, historical, architectural and from a real Amstel-dammer.”
