The NDSM wharf in Amsterdam North is a rugged, adventurous and iconic area on the IJ. After the closure of the yard in 1984, the complex became a breeding ground for artists and creative businesses.
The history of the NDSM wharf goes back to 1894. In that year, the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij was founded at Oostenburg, Amsterdam-East. On the same location where VOC ships were built a few centuries earlier.
Due to a lack of expansion options, the NSM had to look for another location. In 1915 it was found on the other side of the IJ; in Amsterdam North. In 1920, the Nederlandsche Dok Maatschappij also found its place on the IJ bank on the adjacent site. After the Second World War, the companies decided to merge. In 1946 the Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij was founded: the NDSM.
While the guide tells you all about the former function of the various buildings, you can enjoy beautiful street art. For example, on the wall of the Lasloods you can see the world's largest image of Anne Frank.
The IJ is also not forgotten. This economically important area has been undergoing dynamic development in recent years.
