The Western Islands are three islands in the center of Amsterdam that were built in 1611 to expand the ports.

They consist of Bickerseiland, Prinseneiland and Realeneiland.

The Prinseneiland is known for the most beautiful warehouses in Amsterdam, but the other two islands also offer many interesting places; Do you know, for example, what a windlass is or where the name Galgenstraat comes from?

Due to their isolated location between the IJ and the railway line from Amsterdam to Haarlem, the islands form an oasis of peace and tranquility in the hectic city and are therefore an ideal place for artists and writers.

During the tour you will not only see the homes and studios of George Hendrik Breitner and Ans Markus and the favorite café of writer Jan Mens, but also the house where Eli Asser lived and the birthplace of photographer Jacob Olie.

The IJ is also not forgotten. This economically important area has been undergoing dynamic development in recent years.
