Amsterdam has a rich and eventful Jewish history and Jewish life gave the city its very own identity with associations, synagogues, markets and Jewish neighbourhoods. The Second World War left deep wounds; of the original 140,000 Jews in the Netherlands in 1940, 80,000 lived in Amsterdam and only 7,000 survived the war.
Jews came to Amsterdam from the 16th century. It started with the Sephardic Jews who were expelled from Spain and Portugal. The largest group, however, would be the Ashkenazi Jews, or the German and Eastern European Jews. After World War II, Jewish life continued on a much smaller scale.
The guide will take you to famous places such as De Dokwerker and the Auschwitz monument and you will visit the Hollandse Schouwburg. During this impressive tour you will also visit the Holocaust Names Monument, which opened in September 2021.
