The Amsterdam School is a movement in art and architecture from the first half of the 20th century.
Because of the often appalling conditions under which the workers had to live in large cities at the end of the 19th century, the government passed the Housing Act in 1901. This laid down the requirements that a so-called housing law house had to meet with regard to, among other things, the size and sanitary facilities; 'no hovels but palaces' was the motto.
The guide takes you to the Het Schip residential complex from 1919 by architect Michel de Klerk in the Spaarndammerbuurt, the absolute highlight of the Amsterdam School architecture, and to the beautiful Zaanhof. A visit to Museum Het Schip is also possible. The entrance to the museum (€15) is not included in the price of this tour.
