The Jordaan was a typical working-class neighborhood, where many craftsmen and small businesses were located. The eventful past of the Jordaan still contributes to the characteristic neighborhood it is today.
Very special are the many beautiful courtyards where you can forget the hectic pace of the city.
The first almshouses were also founded in the early 17th century when the canals and the Jordaan were created. This usually happened at the time of inheritance, in which case the heirs were instructed to found an almshouse and usually also to act as regent themselves.
Courtyards are sometimes difficult to find because the entrance is a nondescript front door. The houses are tiny and built around a courtyard that often housed the communal toilet, water pump and place to do the laundry. Today, these courtyards have been turned into beautiful gardens.
The tour goes to some of the most beautiful courtyards in the Jordaan.
